“Spanish people were also emigrants; furthermore, we were illegal immigrants. Hoping for a better future, we crossed oceans and borders, to start over in faraway places. Spain has changed so much that it is hard to find ourselves in the eyes of others, those who come to our country with the same purpose, with the same story as that of millions of Spanish men and women”.

This is the beginning of the exhibition “Emigrating Spain - Welcoming Spain”, organised by Fundación Francisco Largo Caballero jointly with Universitat de València.

The exhibition addresses the migratory phenomenon in a serious and rigorous manner with more than 500 original pieces including photographs, documents, letters, magazines, books and personal objects from over 30 public and private, national and international archives. The main goal is to remember what we were, i.e. a country of emigrants, so that memory can help us build what we want to be, i.e. a reception country.

The exhibition is structured into two large blocks. The first one deals with emigrating Spain in a tour to seven sections:  Emigration to America (1882-1935), Political emigration, Domestic migration, Emigration to developed Europe (1956-1974), Back to America, Temporary emigration, and Coming back and staying.

The second one covers the reality of Spain as a reception country. It aims to promote empathy, pointing to coincidences between the life experience of our emigrants and that of the immigrants who live with us today.

As an introduction to the exhibition, visitors find an installation entitled “Ulysses” by Fernando Clavería. It consists of primitive ladders made with logs used by immigrants to jump over the Melilla fence.

The project is completed by four audiovisual sequences with music by Amancio Prada and Pablo Guerrero, and unpublished pictures, some of which have been restored on the occasion of the exhibition; a closing audiovisual, a web site, and a remarkable catalogue produced by outstanding specialists; a second edition is already under way, as it has become a reference book in this area.

The exhibition “Emigrating Spain, Welcoming Spain” and the research project behind it have been awarded the emigration gold medal of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
