Libraries and documentation centres
SIB manages, preserves, and disseminates the collection owned by Universitat de València and makes available to the university community the information produced by other libraries, data banks, and research centres. The members of the university community are fully entitled to use the Library Information Service: lecturers, researchers, students, postgraduates doing their theses in Universitat, and the administration and service personnel. The Library Information Service encompasses central services and different library information units (libraries, archives, documentary centres) in different campus locations. With the headquarters in the Nau building, the central services are structured in different sections. The Computerised Section develops the computerised library system and runs the collective catalogue. The Inter-Library Loan Section aims to find and facilitate access to primary documents published anywhere in the world and not available at Universitat. This is done through either loans or reproduction. The central service also manages periodicals acquisition and access to electronic resources (data bases, magazines, digital library, etc.) as well as the restoration and photographic and digital reproduction of old collections. The library information units are service points near the colleges and specialised in specific areas of knowledge.
SIB user servicesReading rooms. The libraries of Universitat de València
have an approximate area of The documents in the Universitat libraries are available to any user. There are no special requirements to read them in the rooms. The user is responsible for the integrity of the document. In addition to the normal working hours, during the exams some libraries have special opening times at weekend or remain open 24 hours a day. Access to the reading rooms during these special periods is restricted to Universitat de València users. Borrowing. All Universitat libraries have a computerised borrowing facility. University-card holders may benefit from it. Universitat de València outsiders will be able to borrow books if allowed by the agreements signed between the Universitat and other institutions. In such cases, they must apply for a SIB user card. All documents published after 1900 can be borrowed, except for: reference works, newspapers, rare or precious books, special materials, unpublished doctoral theses, and any collections that might be difficult to replace. For information on the borrowing regulation in force (working hours, loan period, book return, fines, ect.) please visit the SIB website. The Computerised Catalogue of Universitat de València shows where documents are located and their status (available or borrowed). It also allows users to know about the situation of a user as to the books borrowed and to make reservations without going to the library. Inter-library loan. The inter-library service aims to find and provide access by means of loan or reproduction to primary documents published anywhere in the world and not available at Universitat. In turn, Universitat also lends its collections to other Spanish or foreign libraries and institutions. This service deals with applications for books that are not on sale, like theses and dissertations, newspaper articles, microforms, or any other document type. Documents are borrowed from Spanish or foreign libraries, trying to find them in Spain and Europe first, and the USA later, whether the document is an original or a reproduction (paper, microform, photograph, etc.). University community members (lecturers, administration, and students) can use this service, as well as Universitat outsiders. Both cases require payment as per the fees approved by Universitat. Library information and access to electronic resources. Universitat de València provides library information by means of different basic tools: - Access to the catalogue of Universitat de València libraries, a single catalogue for all libraries. For information, see the SIB website (www.uv.es/biblioteca). It includes all monographs and journals in Universitat de València, with information on their location and status. - Access to CD-ROM databases or the Internet through the SIB website. These resources can be accessed from any computer connected to the network of Universitat or from home via the VPN system. Overall, more than 90 multidisciplinary or knowledge-specialised databases can be accessed. In addition to the resources, you can find information on contents, user guides, connection instructions, latest upgrades, bases under test, and the details of the system managers. - Access to the abstracts and complete papers of the electronic journals subscribed. On the SIB website, the contents of both Spanish and foreign journals subscribed by Universitat de València can be read. The contents of other journals can be seen using other portals, like Swetswise. The catalogue of the currently subscribed electronic journals can also be consulted. The complete texts of over 3.600 titles can be read. Journals can be searched for by title, subject matter, or publishers. - Digital Library. Located at the medical college, the library has nearly 40,000 volumes,
which include numerous rare books and leaflets from the 15th to 19th
centuries, and collections of important 18th and 19th century journals.
Its origins are in the old Medical College library collections, to
which continuous donations by Valencian and Spanish physicians have
been added over the past hundred years. Among recent donations we find
those by the psychiatrist and medical historian Vicent Peset Llorca,
which is located in the room named after him.
Next to the library, we find the Museum of Medical History, which was founded by José M. López Piñero with instruments, equipment, and other materials and iconography from the Medical College. Ever since, donations have been made by institutions and individuals. Today it shelters more than 3,000 objects.
In addition, the Library and the Museum have archives of different types. First, the personal archives of León Sánchez Quintanar, Joan B. Peset i Vidal, José Rodríguez Pertegás, and Vicent Peset Llorca. Secondly, clinical archives of figures such as the internist Fernando Rodríguez Fornos and the dermatologist José Esteller Luengo. Finally, institutional archives, mainly that of the Medical College, since the late 19th century.
These storages facilities store the collections used to a lesser extent. For space reasons, they cannot be kept at the libraries of Universitat de València. It currently stores more than 75,000 files, academic dissertations accounting for a large portion. The files are kept in closed repositories. For access, an application must be filed at any of the libraries.
